*Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India* (2001) is a landmark Bollywood film directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. Set in 1893 during British colonial rule, the film follows the struggles of Champaner, a rural Indian village oppressed by the heavy taxes, or *lagaan*, imposed by the British. When the villagers plead for relief, Captain Andrew Russell, the arrogant British officer, issues a bold challenge: he will waive the taxes for three years if the villagers can beat the British team in a cricket match. If they lose, however, the tax will be tripled. The film focuses on Bhuvan, a brave villager who accepts the challenge and rallies a diverse team of villagers, many of whom are unfamiliar with cricket, to face off against the British.
The film’s intense build-up to the climactic cricket match keeps viewers engaged, portraying both the fierce colonial tensions and the underdog spirit of the villagers. Through themes of unity, perseverance, and cultural pride, *Lagaan* captures the socio-political climate of the time. The British characters are shown as dismissive and sometimes oppressive, in contrast with the villagers’ resilience and camaraderie. The music, composed by A. R. Rahman, adds depth to the story, with songs that reflect the villagers’ hopes and struggles. Featuring Aamir Khan as Bhuvan and Gracy Singh as Gauri, *Lagaan* was critically acclaimed and became one of the few Indian films to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
